She is out of remission in a way that has her family and friends scrambling to help her and once again they are call. ing on the generosity of her many friends. Her daughter, Suzette Reed, will host a taco and bin- go fundraiser Saturday, Feb. 19, in the Greenville Town Hall. A taco dinner will be served starting at 5:30 p.m. for $8 per plate, and beer and wine will be available. Bingo will start after dinner, at about 7:30 p.m. There will also be lots of prizes for lucky ticket holders in chance drawings. Visit helpgeorgette.org for more information and the chance to donate online. Do- nations can also be sent to the Georgette Schmidt Donation Fund via Plumas Bank, Greenville Branch, P.O. Box 612, Greenville, CA 95947. Childbirth classes in Quincy Birth Partners Pregnancy Mentors announces that childbirth' education classes will begin Feb. 7 in Quincy from 6 to 8:30 p.m., and will continue February 9, 14, 16, 21 and 23. Each class covers a differ- ent topic. The series covers the stages of labor, comfort and relaxation techniques, the role of the labor partner, medical and alternative inter- ventions and augmentations of labor and birth, breastfeed- ing, postpartum issues, par- enting the newborn and bond- ing and attachment. Why attend childbirth classes? Evidence indicates that: Delivery was less distress- ing in those who attended childbirth education classes. At age 6-9 weeks, infants born to parents who took classes that included early in- fant care displayed signifi- cantly better sleeping pat- terns than infants of parents who did not. Information gained about the use of pain medication in labor was clearly helpful when women made decisions about pain relief. Classes facilitated positive birth outcomes, including re- duction of Cesarean births. The mother's confidence in her innate ability to give birth was enhanced. Positive feelings toward the birth, health caregivers and the infant were fostered. There were decreases in the use of drugs during labor --including costly epidurals. Attendance at childbirth classes was associated with a 75 percent increase in the odds that a child would be breastfed. "Your classes helped me see that I need to start making responsible health decisions for my child now, during pregnancy," said a 2010 Birth Partners participant. Classes are partially fund- ed by Plumas Rural Services' California Women, Infants and Children (WIC) depart- ment, and Plumas Crisis and Intervention and Resource Center. Classes are free for WIC and other eligible fami- lies. Pre-registration for class- es is requested. For more in- formation, contact Susie Wil- son at 284-1406, birthpartners .susie@gmail.com, or go to mamamentors.com. What's cooking? Young moms are invited to learn how to prepare nutri- tious and inexpensive meals in a six-class series sponsored by the Feather River Coopera- tive Parish United Methodist Women. Childcare will be provided, and weekly classes will begin Thursday, March 10. A spe- cial class, titled "Moms Cook- ing With Their Children," will be held Saturday, April 9, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The sixth and final class will be cooking for the com- munity supper Monday, April 25. Times will be announced during one of the early class- es. The four Thursday classes will be March 10, March 17, March 24 and March 31, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Class size is limited to 15 young moms, so early applica- tion is suggested, and morns are urged to commit them- selves to all six classes. The Methodist women are hosting the class to help young morns build confidence through cooking. Cooking vocabuiary and meal planning lessons will be secondary to.the chance for young women to connect with each other in a warm, friend- ly environment.
