Tigers take two
The Portola girls varsity
basketball team won their
first two league contests at
home last week. The Lady
Tigers downed the Williams
Yellow Jackets 63-21 on Tues-
day and then defeated the Es-
parto Spartans Friday night
46 to 23.
In the league opener
against Williams, the girls
played smothering defense,
holding the Yellow Jackets to
just 21 points. The Lady
Tigers outscored the Jackets
14 to 2 in the final period.
Steals were a big factor in the
victory, with senior Bailey
Holt and sophomore Emma
Briggs grabbing nine out of a
team total of 21. Offensively,
the Tigers shot a respectable
50 percent from the floor
with four players in double
figures. Briggs led the way
draining 12 points, followed
by senior Lucy Wilbanks
who netted 11, while senior
Anna Roach and junior
Marissa Wehrman each tal-
lied 10. Forwards Briggs and
Wilbanks led the rebounding
for Portola with nine and
eight respectively, followed
by Roach and senior Ellie
Kibble with four apiece.
On Friday, the Lady Tigers
had to play without their
leading scorer, as Briggs was
sidelined with an ankle in-
jury suffered in practice. The
Tigers' rhythm was definite-
ly thrown off, as they only
shot 38 percent from (he
floor. It looked like it might
be a long night for the Tigers
at the end of the first period
with Esparto trailing by only
three points, 11 to 8. Howev-
er, in the second frame, the
Tigers outscored the Spar-
tans 16 to 3 to take a 16-point
lead to the locker room. After
an unproductive third period
where the teams scored four
points apiece, the Tigers out-
paced Espa~to 14 to 7 in the
fourth to" nail down the 46 to
23 league victory. Wehrman
knocked d~wn 12 points to
lead the Tigers, followed
closely-byi Holt with 11.
Roach lit up the board with
nine, and Ltndsay Compton
tallied six. On the boards, se-
nior forward Camry Hous'el

and Roach both grabbed nine pleased with the overall per-
rebounds, while Wehrman formance of his team: "These
snatched six. Wilbanks and last two games the girls' ball
Compton contributed four movement has allowed every-
apiece. ~ one to contribute on the of-
Coach Matt Compton was fensive end of the court,"
Compton Said. "On the defen-
sive side, we've really been
working on our man-to-man
coverage in practice lately. I
think it's paying off as the
girls are really showing bet-
ter focus, and staying more
involved." The Lady Tigers
go on the road this week to
take on East Nicolaus and
Biggs. No scores, were avail-
able at press time.
Grooming report
Almanor Ranger District:
Our recreation crew made a
trip out last Friday to set
some tracks on the cross-
country ski trails at Mc-
Gowan Lake.
The snow is somewhat
heavy and lcy in places, espe-
cially in the shade, so use cau-
tion, In particular, be aware
of and avoid a hole marked
with bright orange caution
poles on the Morgan Summit
to Pear Lake Loop. Go with a
friend, go prepared, and go
have fun!
Eagle Lake Ranger District:
Warm temperatures en-
courage excellent spring rid-
ing conditions. Afternoon rid-
ing is best; the morning trails
are icy and fast. There are a
few dirt patches showing on
the Fredonyer loops at
Willard Hill and Goumaz. At
55 degrees, the ~snow. is disap-
pearing fast. We have about
another week of grooming; af-
ter that we need new snow.
Skiers: We are projecting to
have the Butte Lake road
groomed for this weekend.

Beginning
onr 27th year
in business!
During the past 26 years,we are proud
tohave built more than 70 homes and 100
garages in Plumas County, not to mention
the hundreds of remodels, additions and
insurance repairs we've done as well.
With the change in the economy
(specifically, fewer new housing starts),
my business partner (and son) Donavon
and I knew we had to change our business
model. We're not going anywhere, and
we still build new homes, garages
and commercial buildings.
So, in the past year we found there
was a real need to assist homeowners
in making their existing homes more
efficient, attractive and valuable. We've
helped lots and lots of people with all
kinds of projects
that might have
only taken
15 minutes
to several
days or
weeks to
complete.
And, if we
couldn't do their job, we'd
make sure to connect them with some-
one who could.
It's that kind of service and satisfaction
that Will help ~ake us through our next
25 years!!!
