6C Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011 Bulletin, Progressive, Record, Reporter Mind feet in winter California winters allow residents to enjoy a wide vari- ety of outdoor sports from reg- ular aerobic activities like running and cycling to fast- track fun in the snow. Snowbound sports like downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding and sledding provide an exhilarat- Lng cardiovascular workout and a welcome change from the concrete walls of the gym. But these wintry sports can be a challenge to foot health. • "Proper footwear is a critical component to staying injury- free during winter sports activ- ities," said J. Brian Warne, DPM, a podiatric surgeon. Abnormal biomechanical forces like excess motion and instability also can be con, trolled with custom orthotic devices will improve foot function, minimize stress and help prevent foot injuries. One of the most common winter foot injuries, with or i without snow, is due to the cold temperatures, Warne said. Properly fitting, insulated waterproof boots or shoes are as important as coats, hats, or gloves in the outdoors during the winter, t Socks are also important. Warne recommends a single pair of thick socks made of. acrylic fibers, or a blend in- cluding them, ,that "wick" away moisture caused by per- spiration in the boot. Snowmobile club plans events JOHN DEE00 The Lake Almanor Snow- mobile Club is actively wel- coming the winter storms as the 2011 season gets under- way. For many years, the club has participated in promoting the sport of snowmobiling, safety and community in- volvement. Anyone with an interest in snowmobiling is welcome to visit a meeting (held monthly from October to April) to learn more about member- ship. The January meeting will be a potluck on Thurs- day, Jan. 20, at the Brinkmans' on Peninsula Dri- ve, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Club activities include scheduled club rides under the direction of Tom Gaither, with rides to Fredonyer, Humbug and Butte Meadows. The biggest project of tle year is the annual poker run, on the Saturday of Presidents' Weekend, Feb. 20. The event typically draws a few hundred riders, with many of them coming from out of the area. This year's poker run will be dedicated to Alexandra Gaither, as the club continues to help the family with costs in- curred during Alex's recovery. Thanks to the generosity of local merchants, the success of last year's poker run raffle made possible donations to the Chester Elementary Play- ground Fund, Chamber of commerce fireworks, Eagle Lake Children's Charities and Chester High School's Fish Program and Sober Grad- Night. Information regarding the Lake Almanor Snowmobile Club can be accessed through the Chester Lake Almanor chamber's website, or by con- tacting Jenni Cesarin (284- 7469 or rce: sarin@frontiernet.net) or Kathy Donley (596-4354 or Kathy@thedonleys.net). I Warmer than usual condi- tions have resulted in heavy, wet snow; please be aware that this can translate into hazardous riding conditions. Make sure you ride with oth- ers or let people know where you're going, bring emer- gency supplies and keep an eye on the weather forecast. Have fun out there! Eagle Lake Ranger District Conditions have changed. Last week we had wet snow, and the trails still groomed up nicely. With temperatures greater than 35 degrees, our • equipment is less effective, thus preventing us from working the Bogard Trails and the Fredonyer Long Loop. All other trails are ready for your riding enjoyment! Skiers: Our projected plan is to groom a trail at Hog Flat Reservoir. Park off Highway 44 at Goumaz Road (Forest Road 30N03); in the meadow on the right you will find.a groomed track. This is a per- fect loop for beginning skiers. If we were not able to set a track, just skiaround the frozen reservoir. Let your in- spiration, the views and the terrain determine your route! Hat Creek Ranger District Last Tuesday's storm dropped 3 - 8 inches of fresh snow in the Ashpan/Batfle Creek area and Latour State Forest. Ninety miles of trail are groomed and open for rid- ing, including the Latour to Battle Creek connector. Warmer temperatures are hampering grooming efforts somewhat, but Ashpan trails are in great shape with 45-50 miles groomed recently. Please use caution on the La- tour system, as springs cross- ing the roads have created some hazards along the edges and across some roads. Grooming will continue as temperatures allow.
