Photos by Karen Barker Whitewater park expert has plans for Susan River Jim Litchfield, key expert in developing the whitewater park on the Truckee River in .Reno and Sparks, Nev., gave a presentation at the Susan River Watershed Group meeting Jam 13. He dis- cussed how he has designed and funded the Truckee Riv- er and similar projects, the potential of this type of pro- ject along the Susan River and how it can work with the overall watershed restora- tion project. " There is potential for a pro- ject like thi on an appropri- ate scale for Susan River. Two or three pool drop struc- tures could be created on the Susan River behind Lassen High School. This work could also provide holding pools for fishing and become popular for tubing and kayaking. An adjacent trail along that segment of the riv- er could be used to walk back up and run the drops again. Any work in this area could fit into the community be- cause the City of Susanville has the Susan River Parkway in that area. In addition to this presen- tation the agenda included items regarding the historic condition of the Susan River, ongoing and potential fund- ing projects for Susan River restoration, as well as sched- " uling of meetings for the next six months out. The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in SusanvUle has led the watershed group since October 2009. Ceci Dale-Ces- mat, district conservationist for NRCS, talked about the future of the watershed group and development of a core team to lead future restoration efforts. She will be leaving SusanviUe in Feb- ruary to become the new as- sistant state NRCS conserva- tionist in Davis. NRCS wants to continue to lead the group but will need help from the members of the Susan River Watershed Group to move the project forward• For more informa- tion about this effort, call the NRCS office at 257-7271.
