Open mic nights frequently
serve as an opportunity for
musicians and writers to au-
dition for a bigger opportuni-
ty or show off their talent in
more informal environment
than a full-blown concert.
The Lassen County Arts
Council's open mic night at
Words and Music held Tues-
day, Dec. 21 at the Arts Coun-
cil's Gallery, located at 807
Cottage St., in Susanville
proved no exception. The
evening provided a rare op-
portunity for the unsched-
uled performers because the
Arts Council only offers open
mics quarterly.
John Murray opened the
evening with an a cappella
version of his original song,
"Baby, I'm Fighting for Your
Love."
Murray said he hopes
someday he can a write a
song and hit the big time.
Kenny Joe Zimmerman

mic night to show off his new

Elgin Cannon joined Zim-
merman and added a little
harmony to the old rock and
roll standard, "Stand By Me,"
written by Ben E. King, Jerry
Leiber and Mike StoUer in
1961.
Two members of Susanville
band Luther Red -- guitarist,
singer and songwriter Brian
Taylor and percussionist
Mike Rivas -- performed a
pair of original songs, "Jen-
ny" and "Bruce Lee " Gui-
