Bulletin, Progressive, PinePress, Reporter, Record, Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010 STREET 25th Annual OD XTRAVAGANZA 2010 I For the love of cars: A short history of the event M. Kate West Chester Editor chesternews@plumasnews.com In keeping with tradition, the 25th annual street Rod Extravaganza will be held in the Chester Park Sept. 11, the Saturday immediately fol- lowing the Labor Day week- end. This event has always been held in the pastoral setting of mountain oaks, cool green lawns along the North Fork of the Feather River. Chester Park has always been one of the "wild cards" that has stacked the deck and assured the ongoing popularity of this annual event. Notching the popularity factor even more; the pre- miere event draw has always been the afternoon "Cruise around Lake Almanor" poker run that offers a driving tour of 35 miles of lake views, flo- ra, wildlife and scenic moun- tain vistas. Street Rod Extravaganza draws an average of 135 par- ticipants each year although past registration records put the all-time high attendance at 250 entries. The beginning- "The Street Rod Extrava- ganza began as a vision of Chester resident and Plumas County Deputy Sheriff Tom Turkington, who was also a founding member of the local Sierra Cascade Street Rod- ders Club," said 24-year judge Rick Trebes. He said.the firs event in 1985 was a solo effort pulled off by Turkington with the assistance of a few volun- teers. "The event was open par- ticipants showing classic cars and trucks up through the year 1948," said Trebes. "I had a 1964 Chevy Impala and had to leave it in the parking lot!" The second year the event was opened to cars and trucks up through the year 1964 and Turkington's solo event management became a team effort and he was joint- ed by fellow club mem- bers/spouses Rick and Pam Trebes, Red and Sandy Mey- ers, J.J and Paula Johnson and Dan and Vicki Bickle. "As a team we continued to improve upon and offer the annual car show up until 1995," Trebes said. Reminiscing, Trebes said, "We used to have a lot of fa- mous cars in our shows, many of which were featured in national magazines. After celebrating their 10th anniversary in 1995, the event team passes the annual t Street Rod Extravaganza into the hands of the Chester- Lake Almanor Chamber of Commerce.. When asked about the team's continued commit- ment to sponsor the event over the years, Trebes said, "We all liked cars and that all there was to it." In 2010 the event continues to be sponsored by the Chester-Lake Almanor Chamber of Commerce. FOOD ~ FARMERS MARKET - ARTS CRAFTS To Water Vallc/, (see inset) :: :T;rakesbad.
