One of the recreational
highlights of our area is the
Pacific Crest Trail. From
Highway 49 in the south to
Highway 44 in the north,
the trail stretches 187 miles,
offering plenty of opportu-
nities for day hikes, week-
end backpacking trips or
longer expeditions.
But this gem of a trail
doesn't take care of itself.
Enter the Pacific Crest
Trail Association, a non-
profit group dedicated to
maintaining and promoting
the trail.
Justin Kooyman, the
group's newly designated
regional representative for
the North-Central Califor-
nia section of the Pacific
Crest Trail (which includes
Plumas County), has a
number of trail projects
lined up for the coming
months.
Two workdays, Thurs-
days July 30 and Oct. 1, will
foc.us on the trail near the
Sierra Buttes. Volunteers
will meet at 9 a.m. at the
trailhead where the PCT
crosses Highway 49, two
miles east of Sierra City.
Work will include brushing
and trail tread repair.
A little farther afield, a
workday has been sched-
uled Sunday, July 26, at
Echo Lake in the Lake
Tahoe Basin Management
Unit. Volunteers will meet
at 9 a.m. at the PCT/Tahoe
Rim Trail trailhead at the
east side of Lower Echo
Lake, about a half-hour
south of South Lake Tahoe.
Work will include brushing
and light tread repair.
A weekend of work is
scheduled Oct. 3-4 at Jack-
son Meadows Reservoir in
the Tahoe National Forest.
Convene at 10 a.m. Satur-
day at the East Meadow
Campground at Jackson
Meadows Reservoir, about
a half-hour north of Truck-
ee. Volunteers can expect to
hike one to four miles and
perform brushing and trail
tread repair.
Advance registration is
required, and volunteers
are encouraged to sign up
early for their choice of
dates and locations.
For all Pacific Crest Trail
Association projects, volun-
teers need to have appropri-
ate work clothes (long
pants), sturdy closed-toe
shoes (preferably leather
boots), work gloves, lunch
and at least two liters of wa-
ter.
If you have any questions
or want to sign up for a pro-
ject, e-mail Justin at jkooy-
man@pcta.org or call 414-

Just a reminder, this
weekend, July 18-19, en-
trance to Lassen Vol-
canic National Park is
free. If you miss this one,
the park service has sched-
uled another free weekend
Aug. 15-16. The park offers
a variety of activities, from
a junior ranger program to
guided hikes. Visit
