-e. vv==ouay, Juy u, ,:u= s DUII(I.I[I, FIL)IIIIVI, recora, Keporter Michael Condon Staff Writer Internet@plumasnews.com Henry Winkler, aka the "Fonz" of Happy Days fame, when asked what attracted him to fly-fishing, answered, "Fishing is like a washing ma- chine for the brain." If you have to think long and hard about what that means, you probably need to go fishing. Whether you really need to go fishing, or just want to go fishing, here are some great local options to consider: Frenchman Lake Summer is in full swing at Frenchman. Garrett and Toby Tamagul of Reno caught eight rainbow trout across from the boat dock at Frenchman Campground. They were us- ing salmon eggs (Pautske -- Green Label). The fish were between 15 and 20 inches in length, and about 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 pounds. Trolling has been good on the north end and east side of the lake. Productive lures are the Tasmanian Devil, Rooster Tails, Needlefish and Dick Nites. The most successful flies are mayflies, Woolly Buggers in green or black prince nymphs, pheasant tails and different leeche patterns. Call Wiggins Trading Post for the most current information (993-4683). Lake Almanor Trolling has been getting better. Boaters are reporting good to excellent fishing in several areas of the lake in- cluding the A-Frame, Rec. 1, the dam and Big Springs. Doug Neal of Almanor Fish- ing Adventures reports catch- ing fish from Rocky Point to the Fox Farm trolling Sep's Strike Master Dodgers with a night crawler 18 - 20 inches behind the dodger. Dodgers and crawlers, Speedy Shiners and Needlefish are all catching fish. The east basin of the lake is the place to be for salmon and trout. The west side is warm- ing up a lot, and that is where the bass bite is picking up as well. There have been reports of smallmouth bass up to 4 pounds, which is very large for Almanor. Tom Maumoynier of Lake Almanor Fishing Company in Chester reports that a few Hexagenia mayflies are start- ing to hatch. These large mayflies are a big draw for trout, salmon and smallmouth bass as well as anglers. The best action is on the west shore in the evening. Even if the adults are not hatching in big numbers, Hexagenia nymph imitations and Woolly Buggers in brown and burnt orange will pro- duce when fished deep. Lake Davis Water temperatures are now in the high 60s to low 70s. This has increased the insect activity and the trout are tak- ing advantage of the addition- al feed sources. Damselflies and blood midges are hatching. Fly an- glers are having success with damsel imitations, pheasant tail nymphs, sheep creek nymphs, blood midge pupae imitations, Woolly Buggers and Jay Fair Wiggle Tail nymphs. The best results have been on the west side of the lake from Eagle Point up to Free- man Creek. Bank anglers are also do- ing well using night crawlers or PowerBait in a variety of colors. Eagle Point, Catfish Cove, Coot Bay and Fairview Point are all productive locations. Some catfish are also start- ing to bite. Trolling anglers are doing best north of the big island. Popular lures are Dick Nites Copper Red Heads, Sockeye Slammers in fire tiger color, or Rainbow Runners in red or green. Needlefish in fire tiger, metallic perch or red dot frog are also catching fish. For the most up-to-date in- formation, call J&J Grizzly Store and Camping Resort at 832-0270.
